It may come as a surprise to some but this year(2017), I will not be setting any goals. Whilst everyone is busy with their New Year’s Resolutions, planning to lose weight, make more money, find their ideal mate, get a better job and the list goes on and on, I, on the other hand, have refrained from listing out all the things I want to do this year.
What prompted this seemingly crazy decision, because we all know if you don’t set goals for yourself, you’re just living your life aimlessly without any true and definite purpose.
Well, don’t get your underwear all tied up in a bunch. This year I decided to take a different approach. Rather than set goals, I listed my accomplishments for 2017.Everything I achieved for 2017.But how can I have accomplishments for the year and it’s barely started?
I’m starting this year with the end in mind. This brilliant idea came from a sentence taken from a book I casually picked up while browsing in a bookstore.
Begin with the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen.
Stephen Covey – 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
When you begin with the end in mind, you’re already visualizing the outcome of the attainment of your goals. Your mind now will have to adjust to your way of thinking to bring your accomplishments into reality. Of course, this does mean that you would have a clear cut plan that aids in your accomplishments.
When you achieve something, it’s usually on the basis of you doing something in order to achieve your goals. Action is always required in order to achieve your goals. Starting with the end in mind is simply you listing out your accomplishments as already having achieved them and each day you flex your proactive muscles to make things happen.
Listing out your accomplishments also eliminates the biggest goal breaker, Doubt. When you have doubts it slows you down from achieving your goals as you have to now spend time eradicating such doubts and fears. However the moment you achieve your goals, those same doubts are kicked to the curb as you gained the confidence to achieve your goals no matter what.
Starting with the end in mind means that you’re not concerned with doubts, challenges, obstacles, fears and insecurities even though you may encounter them all. Your main and only concern is the outcome which is the accomplishment aspect.
There is a saying, “Fake it till you make it.” Just bask in the feeling of having accomplished all your goals. Feel it each and every single day working towards their attainment with a sense of peace and clarity of already knowing they are accomplished.
So call me crazy if you want to, but my approach this year is not to set goals but to list my accomplishments. I’ll end with a food for thought moment……….
The definition of a goal is, “an aim or desired result.” The definition of an accomplishment is ” something that has been achieved successfully.”
I’d much rather choose the latter that comes with the feeling of definite achievement. Would love to hear your thoughts and your approach to achieve your goals for 2017, please share. Comment below and subscribe for more fun & inspriational articles.
